Host OOKL at your venue
What type of venues can make use of OOKL?
OOKL is a platform that will work in any venue - large or small, indoor or out, animals or plants...as long as it gets mobile reception.

What evaluations of the service have taken place
There have been three external reviews of OOKL by leading academics. The Department of Culture Media and Sport commissioned a year long study undertaken by Prof Mike Sharples of the University of Birmingham in 2006. Further studies have been carried out by the Institute of Education and the London Knowledge Lab. All are available here.

What is the connection between OOKL and "myartspace"?
Myartspace was the name given to OOKL during the initial trial phase. The name was changed because the service has been designed to support a wide range of interests or subjects that teachers and cultural venues have, not just those that are art-based. It is just as relevant for learning about science and history as it is for art.
top
Does it support the national curriculum?
The service is designed to help people get the most from visits to all cultural venues and across all subjects. OOKL will help you deliver engaging learning opportunities across any subject that you already support. OOKL is approved by Curriculum Online.
top
How do I promote this to teachers?
You can promote it in the same way you promote your existing education program to schools. In addition, we will be generating national and local PR which will be aimed at schools so, in the future, they should be coming to you to say that they'd like to use the service.
top
Which students is this most relevant for?
The service is designed for Key Stage 2 and above in a formal learning context, and 6 years and up with a parent or carer. There is no upper limit.
top
Why do we need dedicated mobile phones?
OOKL can work on several models of Nokia handsets. The only way to ensure that all students and family visitors are able to use the service is to have dedicated handsets.
top
How many objects need to be tagged?
As many as you like, but we suggest that to get started you'll need to choose at least 50 objects. Most venues have between 100 - 500 objects, but there is no upper limit to the number you can use.
top
Does this work with permanent and/or temporary collections?
It works with both. We suggest you tag the permanent collection to get started. Then you can build in the temporary collections and update the service as those collections change. Collections can even be used without tagging as the service allows people to capture memories on their visit by taking photos and recording sounds too.
top
How much time is required to support OOKL in operation?
You will need to hand out & collect handsets. The service is designed to be self-guided, but you can work with the students and teachers if you prefer more engagement. You will need to prepare lesson plans to support specific curriculum needs and we can help you to prepare these by giving you templates to work from or provide support from our own educational consultants.
top
Can this be linked to our website?
Yes, we can create a link so that all of the featured galleries produced by students who have attended your venue can be viewed on your website. Featured galleries are ones that have been evaluated by a teacher and are approved by them to be made public.
top
What type of mobile does it use?
The service is delivered on Nokia smartphones. These are mass-market devices which are highly robust and familiar to all users.
top
Will OOKL work outside the UK?
Yes & No. Venues in other countries can use OOKL. Contact us to discuss in more detail. UK venues with handsets cannot use the handsets abroad.
top
Can we try before we buy?
Yes, we have several options for undertaking a limited trial. Contact us for more details.
top
Who bears the costs of moving data across the mobile network?
The standard solution is a flat-fee regardless of the number of users or how much they use it. There are no surprises!
top
Who owns the handsets?
The handsets remain the property of OOKL and are returned at the end of the contract (unless otherwise agreed).
top
Can a venue see what students have created?
We take privacy very seriously. Presentations are the private work of students until they are published by the student and vetted by a teacher. Once approved, venues and all visitors to the website can view the finished presentations.

What is a 'content management system'
A content management system is a place on our website which gives you tools to add and edit the objects you want users to learn about. It's quite straightforward to use - choose image, give it a title, add as much extra content as you'd like. Repeat until you've got enough objects. Each object is given a unique code from which you can create a physical tag to attach to the object.

Install OOKL and you get a place to manage and store your objects electronically!
top
We don't have a technical or new media team, how can we install something like this?
OOKL is really simple and anyone with a non-technical background can set it up and operate it in a venue. If you can use a website, then you can use OOKL - guaranteed.
