Which students is this most relevant to?
The service is designed for Key Stage 2 and above. The minimum age to get the most out of the service is 8 - 9 years. There is no upper limit.

Does it support the national curriculum?
OOKL will help you deliver engaging learning opportunities across most subjects including science, art, history and citizenship. OOKL is approved by Curriculum Online.

Does it complement different learning styles?
Yes, in a number of ways:
  • independent and guided research can be carried out eg: talking to people, further reading etc.
  • students collect evidence in their own way - write a comment, record a sound, take a picture.
  • The service has been hailed by the Institute of Education as the future of learning by providing a powerful and simple link between the real world of culture and places and the digital tools of mobile phones and the internet.

Can the students work be assessed?
Yes, students create an online presentation which is published to their teacher. Teachers can review these presentations online and assess them and even share them with other schools where appropriate.

Can I use it for extended activities/projects?
OOKL is designed to support learning before, during and after school. Schools are using the service to create more engaging learning experiences during the visit, to provide collaborative spaces for presentation work and to support more detailed research and offline activities back at school.

What happens if my school doesn't host OOKL handsets?
There are two things you can do:
  1. ask your ICTC Coordinator to contact us and we'll send them more information.
  2. find a venue that has ookl handsets and book a session with them.

Can my students use their own mobiles?
The service has been designed to work on dedicated handsets which may be available in your ICT label or at a participating cultural venue.

Can we use the mobiles in any cultural venue?
Some cultural venues have tagged their content for use with OOKL. That is, you can visit the venue and use OOKL to learn more about their collections.You can find a list of venues that have tagged their content here. If a venue has not tagged their content then you need to seek their permission to use your handsets in their venue as some have issues around copyright.

How much does it cost to use?
If you are using handsets provided by a cultural venue then you need to check with them.

Where can I find teachers' resources?
Teaching resources have been created for each cultural venue. Choose a venue that you want to visit and you can download the teachers packs and lesson plans.

Can the school use their ELCs to pay for the service at a venue?
Yes! OOKL has been approved by Curriculum Online and Teachers can use E-Learning Credits to purchase the service at cultural venues that have registered as a retailer of OOKL with Curriculum Online. Learn more about ELCs

Are there risk assessment documents.
Each venue has completed a risk assessment and their reports are available upon request
